Common Title Transfer Mistakes
- Missing the deadline. Most states require title transfer within 15 to 30 days of purchase. Late transfers can mean penalties or even a hold on your registration.
- Skipping the notary. Some states require a notarized signature on the title. Check your state's DMV site before you go.
- Forgetting the bill of sale. Keep a copy with your records. You may need it for tax purposes or if the buyer has a dispute.
- Not checking for liens. If the previous owner still owed money on the vehicle, the lienholder has a claim. Run a title check before you buy.
- Wrong odometer reading. Federal law requires accurate odometer disclosure on the title. Double-check the number before you sign.
Registration Renewal Tips by Situation
- Just bought a used car. You usually have 30 days to register in your name. Some states let you do it online. Others require a visit to the DMV or county office.
- Rideshare driver. Keep your registration current at all times. A lapse can get you deactivated from the platform and ticketed on the road.
- Multi-vehicle household. Renewal dates often fall in different months. Spread them out on a calendar so you are not hit with several at once.
- Moving to a new state. You typically have 30 to 90 days to register in your new state. Some states require a VIN inspection first.
- Vehicle in storage. If a car will not be driven, you may be able to file a planned non-operation status. This avoids registration fees but also means you cannot drive it until you re-register.
